Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men after skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among men in the U.S. About 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed in their lifetime.
Screening discussions should begin:
At age 50 for average-risk men
At age 45 for men at high risk (including all Black men and those with a father or brother diagnosed before age 65)
At age 40 for men at highest risk (multiple first-degree relatives or BRCA gene mutation carriers)
Speak with your provider about whether PSA testing or other screening methods are right for you.
While less common, testicular cancer is the second most common cancer in men aged 20 to 39 (excluding skin cancer). Early detection offers an excellent chance for a cure.
Common signs include:
A painless lump or swelling in the testicle
A change in size or shape
Heaviness in the scrotum
Pain in the lower abdomen or back
Tenderness or enlargement of breast tissue (due to hormone changes)
If you notice any changes, don’t delay speaking with your provider.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in the United States, claiming over 384,000 lives in 2021—about 1 in 4 male deaths. Heart disease is often “silent” until a major event occurs.
Watch for these signs:
Heart Attack: Chest pain, indigestion, upper body discomfort, nausea, fatigue, or shortness of breath
Arrhythmia: Fluttering sensations or irregular heartbeat
Heart Failure: Swelling, shortness of breath, or fatigue
Even if you’re symptom-free, you may still be at risk. Regular screenings and lifestyle changes can greatly reduce your chances of heart disease.
